Several cities, including Dallas and McKinney, are asking Governor Greg Abbot to veto HB2439. The bill bars cities from mandating construction regulations that are above and beyond national codes.
Houston's City Council approved a measure that allows the city's housing department to seek $45 million in funds to help build up the city's affordable housing inventory.
MEMBER IN THE NEWS: The decision was unanimous. Commissioners in Travis County approve $31 million in bonds that will be used to build affordable housing for seniors in Pflugerville just North of Austin.
Both Texas and the nation have experienced growing affordability since recovering from the GR, but the affordability gap between the state and the nation has narrowed since 2014. Texas ranked 25th among states in 2017 mainly due to its recent slowdown in affordability (just above Washington D.C.).
Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia is concerned about the lack of home ownership rates in his district. He notes that the majority of residents in Precinct 2 are renters because they are low- to moderate-income and cannot afford to become homeowners.

Gaston Place is a senior community owned by HACA. The development was initially built in 1978 to provide housing to the elderly (62 or older), disabled, or those displaced by natural disasters.
