The City of McKinney approved a rezoning request by TAAHP member The NRP Group to build affordable housing near the southeast corner of Collin McKinney Parkway and Craig Drive. The NRP Group is planning for a 206-unit affordable housing community and will be available to residents earning 50-80 percent of McKinney’s $83,000/per year median income. The property will be built in partnership with McKinney Housing Finance Corp.
Despite receiving over 120 letters of opposition from nearby homeowners, the City Council approved the request with a 4-3 vote. Lisa Hermes with the McKinney Chamber of Commerce noted that business owners are constantly citing a lack of affordable housing as a problem for area businesses who are having difficulty finding and maintaining workers. McKinney Flats, as the property will become known as, will offer much-needed affordable housing for the area’s labor force in order to ease the pressure on area businesses and set the stage for economic growth.
