The Texas Affiliation of Affordable Housing Providers (TAAHP) is deeply saddened by the passing of Congresswoman Jackie Walorski on August 3. Walorski District Director Zachery Potts, and her Communications Director Emma Thomson, also passed away in the car accident.

Congresswoman Walorski (R-IN) was one of Congress’ most dedicated and effective champions for affordable housing. She worked hard to expand and strengthen the Housing Tax Credit program and grow its congressional support, including among her peers on the Ways and Means Committee.

She was an early cosponsor of the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act (AHCIA) when it was first introduced in the 115th Congress. She was an original cosponsor of the bill when it was reintroduced in the 116th and was the lead Republican sponsor in the current 117th Congress. When discussing the AHCIA in 2021, Rep Walorski stated, “Affordable housing – especially in rural communities – is key to job creation & economic growth. At Ways of Means, I championed bipartisan legislation, the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act, to expand housing opportunities through this market-based approach.”
It is a devasting loss and we offer our sincerest condolences to the Congresswoman’s family, the families of the other victims, and her staff. As we mourn her loss, we are ever more committed to continuing her cause.
