(AUSTIN, TEXAS) For the last six years, Texas Affiliation of Affordable Housing (TAAHP) has provided more than $80,000 in scholarship funding to students seeking a higher education. Students living in affordable housing communities owned by TAAHP members are eligible. TAAHP’s scholarship program was created to help some of the most vulnerable students in the state pursue a higher level of education as a pathway to self-sustainability and success.

This year, TAAHP is pleased to have awarded $52,500 in scholarships to students living in affordable housing communities across Texas. The total reflects a 525% increase in total dollars awarded compared to 2019 thanks to several generous donations by TAAHP members.

The 2020 scholarship recipients include:

  • Myat May, Austin: $12,500
  • Jorgann Holgersen, Mabank: $10,000
  • Peace Oluwasanmi, Houston: $7,500
  • Heather Mathias, Commerce: $5,000
  • Mason Trujillo, Dalhart: $5,000
  • Absidy DeHoyos, San Antonio: $5,000
  • LaDeja Daughtry, Arlington: $5,000
  • Claudia Emmanuel, Commerce: $2,500

“TAAHP is proud to be able to offer scholarships to residents of affordable housing seeking a higher education,” says Roger Arriaga, TAAHP executive director. “As an organization, we firmly believe that when educational opportunities are available to the residents our members serve, they can and will improve their overall quality of life and will help our economy grow.”

“I am extremely honored to be part of Texas’ affordable housing industry — TAAHP members stepped up in a big way and because of their generosity, we have the opportunity to offer larger grant amounts this year to seven very worthy recipients,” says TAAHP President Janine Sisak. “Assisting with the cost of continuing education is even more critical this year since many of our residents have experienced a loss of income due to the pandemic.”

Scholarship applicants are scored on a rigorous 100-point scale. Scoring categories include grade point average, writing skills, participation in extracurricular activities, recommendations from instructors and mentors and other factors such as their respective school, workload, family obligations, and career objectives.

The 2020 scholarships were announced and presented during the October segment of the 2020 Texas Housing Conference Plus, hosted by TAAHP virtually at www.texashousingconference.org. The application period for 2021 scholarships will open in the Spring of 2021 and selected recipients will be announced at the 2021 Texas Housing Conference next July.
