Some Texas counties did not distribute federal funds provided for the purpose of rent relief needed due to the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic on low-income earners. According to a recent report in the Houston Chronicle, Texas counties will lose a combined $103 million in federal aid provided by the U.S. treasury.
Of the Texas counties that have not yet distributed the funds received, they have until March 31st to distribute all of their funds or it will be reallocated to the Texas Relief Fund that can be accessed by by qualifying residents from across the state or be sent back to the Treasury who can then redistribute the money at its own discretion.
The Texas counties that could stand to lose the most include:
- Hidalgo County (up to $23 million)
- Dallas County (up to $17.7 million)
- Montgomery County (up to $10.2 million – including $3.3 million in just returned)
- Cameron County (up to $9.8 million)
- Brazoria County (up to $7.5 million)
- McLennan County (up to $6 million)
- Laredo (up to $6 million)
- Jefferson County (up to $6 million)
