It comes as no surprise to affordable housing providers that even one of the most “affordable” communities in Texas is relatively unaffordable for the residents living there. As reported in the Laredo Morning Times, Laredo has the second-lowest area median income of 43 metropolitan areas in Texas at $40,600, according to a recent study by the National Low Income Housing Coalition. But fair market rent for a two-bedroom apartment, at $857, is higher even than Waco’s, where a two-bedroom apartment is around $823 a month and median income is $64,500.

Nearly 750 people are on various waiting lists for affordable housing through the City of Laredo; this does not include people waiting for Section 8 or public housing through the Laredo Housing Authority.
