Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate adjourned for the rest of the calendar year without reaching any agreements on tax or spending legislation before the holidays. Congress plans to return on January 8, and will need to work quickly to address government funding before the new deadlines of January 19 and February 2. In order to maintain momentum for potential tax legislation that includes our Housing Credit priorities, TAAHP and its members must continue to engage with the Texas congressional representatives now and into the new year.
AHCIA Continued Advocacy Needed
As of December 13, the AHCIA (H.R. 3238/S. 1557) has received the support of nearly half of Congress at large – split evenly between Republicans and Democrats – with 200 Cosponsors in House and 30 cosponsors in the Senate. These supporters include over three-fourths of the House Ways and Means Committee (which has jurisdiction over the Housing Credit), over half of the House Financial Services Committee (which has jurisdiction over many housing issues), and nine House committee chairs.
The AHCIA remains a top priority for TAAHP, and its Federal Legislative Advocacy Group (FLAG) continues to build co-sponsorship for the legislation. Two weeks ago, TAAHP reached out to the seven current Texas co-sponsors asking them to weigh in with congressional and committee leadership to ensure our key Housing Credit production priorities are included in any tax legislation that materializes.
TAAHP plans to reach out to every Texas Congressional Representative that has not signed onto the legislation and communicate the importance of taking action on affordable housing by co-sponsoring the AHCIA. We will be sending each representative an infographic with information about the impact of the Housing Tax Credit in their district.
TAAHP has identified six AHCIA priority co-sponsors. Please reach out to Whitney Parra at [email protected] if you have a relationship with any of these six House Representatives.
See below for the geographic distribution of AHCIA co-sponsors.
